To Infinity and Beyond

8th February 2022

Infinity coves, also known as infinity curves or photographic curves, are the perfect way to create a feeling of endless space. An infinity wall is a curved surface that seamlessly blends the floor and the wall together so that anything that you put in front of it – an object, a person – will appear to float against a simple, clutter free backdrop.

Check out all of our studios with infinity coves here.

The technique is used by photographers to reduce the reflected light, giving them more control over the shoot environment, perfect, for example, when shooting cars.

Normally painted white, infinity walls have a flawless finish and unlike white paper or material backdrops there are no ripples or shadows for the camera to pick up on. There are no corners, so it’s possible with the right lighting to have an evenly lit background that doesn’t distract from whatever or whoever is being photographed. The background appears to continue forever in all directions and hence the term infinity.

Infinity curves have been created in all sizes to accommodate the different scale of different shoots. The larger the object or group that has to be shot, the larger the infinity curve needs to be. In addition to the L-shape infinity cove, there are also different types, the U-shape and the I-shape that affect the reflected light and help to create the perfect shooting space, especially for automotive photography.

In an old Victorian Riding School on the edge of Regents Park stands The Arena, a wonderfully grand infinity cove that curves up on three sides, making it perfect for large shoots that require greater control of how reflected light falls.

Loft Studios – Studio 1
A large cove on the top floor of an old warehouse building. The cove is 6.4 meters giving a huge shooting environment. The stylish warehouse with exposed brick, oak flooring and high vaulted ceilings has industrial style crittall windows and sklights that can all be blacked out as required.
